We'd like to welcome you in the Drathenhof!

The restaurant at the Schleswig-Holstein Freilichtmuseum

Historic

Johann von Drathen, whose initials are above the small front door, built this handsome farmstead at the Lühnhuser dyke in the marshes of the river Elbe in 1794.

The Drathenhof is a through passage house. The term describes the wide hall which runs the length of the house joining the large door in the gable end by the animals and the ornamental front door in the gable end by the living accommodation. To the left and right of the hall were the domestic and workrooms. The magnificent Heydenreich farmstead from Herzhorn which stands next door in the museum in its original form is of the same type (No 29).

Johann von Drathen's son and successor Hinrich died early. His widow Cecilia Thormählen, who was known as "the Beautiful widow on the dyke, married Albert Greve in 1839 The family continued to run the farm up and until the first World War, when the last remaining heir who could have carried on was killed. In the following years the house was altered and rented out from time to time as a holiday and youth hostel Finally high maintenance costs forced the family to abandon the building. It stood empty for a long period and slowly decayed.

It was a lucky chance that the open air museum which was being developed at that time, needed a suitable building to accommodate a restaurant. After careful consideration and thorough planning it was decided to take over, dismantle and reconstruct this historically valuable building from the marshes of the river Elbe. The Drathenhof opened its doors as a museum restaurant on 31st May 1969.

Today the main hall offers space for some 300 guests in addition to the remodeled side rooms, byres and stables The rooms which resulted have each been differently decorated with panelling and tiles from various regions in Schleswig Holstein (Angeln the Probstei and the Wilster marshes) and furnished accordingly These individual rooms are particularly suited for meals and parties for small groups The kitchen is in the former stables and adjoining rooms. More working space was gained by extending the cellars. In this way a modern efficient restaurant was developed without sacrificing the overall impression of the historical building.

The Drathenhof menu is as diversified as the changeable Schleswig-Holstein countryside. Dishes which are typical for our area, varying according to the seasons, give our guests a culinary impression of this region between the two seas.

The Drathenhof has earned a good reputation far beyond the borders of our region particularly for these dishes but also for its choice of international fare and its unique atmosphere.
